SG Weekly No 005: Love, Your Way

Dear Guildees,

Love is in the air—or is it just the scent of overpriced chocolates and red glitter decorations everywhere? This week, I’m diving into authentic ways to celebrate romance and cherished friendships.

We’ve got a lot to figure out before the special day. Let’s go!

Romantic Gestures That Don’t Feel Tacky

During the Victorian era, flowers were more than just beautiful gifts; they were a way to convey emotions that could not be spoken aloud due to the societal norms of the time. Instead of swiping or sending a text, the Victorians sent flowers.

While roses are still cherished, the holiday industry that has grown up around them has gotten a little out of hand. This year, try skipping the prix fixe restaurant menus and plan something unique instead.

  • Write a heartfelt letter (or make a video): Handwritten notes bring a personal touch that’s hard to beat. Not great with words? Pick the medium that works best for you.
  • Plan a surprise “inning” instead of a dinner out: Dining out on Valentine’s Day can be expensive and disappointing. Consider stargazing with blankets and hot cocoa instead. Use an app like NightSky to explore visible constellations.
  • Cook their favorite meal: Small gestures, like homemade treats, leave a lasting impression.

Celebrating Platonic Love

I’m not a big fan of all the portmanteaus – the Palentines, Galentines, Pupintines and Purrintines – but I like the sentiment. February 14th is a day to be enjoyed by everyone. Here are some ideas for how to shower your friends and family with affection:

  • Bestie Breakfast (or Brunch): Host a get-together, a la Parks and Recreation. Prepare some delicious pancakes, fresh fruit, and coffee, and invite your friends over for a morning filled with laughter and connection.
  • Game Night: Nothing beats a night of laughter and friendly competition! Organize a game night with your friends, featuring their favorite board games or video games.
  • DIY Care Package: Show your friends how much you care with a thoughtful DIY care package! Snacks, a cozy pair of socks, and a handwritten note to a faraway friend can go a long way.
  • Family Scavenger Hunt: Try a Valentine’s scavenger hunt with clues and small surprises hidden around the house.
  • I Choo Choo Choose You: Get out your markers and make punny homemade cards.

Skip the Clichés: Valentine’s Gift (and No Gift) Ideas

Valentine’s Day gifts don’t have to mean heart-shaped everything. Whether you’re shopping for a romantic, an adventurer, or someone who rolls their eyes at the whole thing, I’ve got ideas!

💌 For the Sentimental: A book annotated with personal notes or a playlist of relationship milestones
🎭 For the Fun & Quirky: A custom comic book or movie poster of your love story.
For the Minimalist: A no-gift gift, like a digital detox date.
❤️ For the Classic Romantic: The timeless touch—jewelry, handwritten letters, and luxury scents.
